Look for the SUN to shine in 2025

Explore this website to learn more about the Sun Building, the rooftop Sun signs, and updates on the rehabilitation of the signs.

Installed on the roof of the Sun Building in 1934 twenty years after the construction of the building, the twin neon signs became an iconic feature in Lowell.  Often referred to by many as Lowell’s “Citgo” sign, a reference to the instantly recognizable sign that towers over Boston’s Kenmore Square, in recent years the SUN signs had gone dark.  Faced with an uncertain future and possible loss, the Lowell Historic Board began efforts to preserve and restore the signs in 2017.

As you will see in coming months, the story has a happy ending.
